A practical vermi-composting session    Thangasami talks about the value of trees

Dear Supporters, Past, Present and Future,

The dream of a University for Yeomen is slowly being realized on our model farm across the river from the village of Vadagarampoondi in the heart of Tamil Nadu. This year the charity World Vision, recognising the soil reclamation work in progress, and the simple facilities now in place, arranged for a day course for about 30 men and women engaged in local farming. Also land workers and others daily passing the CHATI farm are observing, enquiring, opining and probably arguing about the ecological farming trials and errors taking place on the (nearly) 8 acres. A shaded area and a cool drink from the well encourages people to call by and talk things over.

It is a drought prone area and this year has seen very little rain. Thankfully, the open well and the percolation pond, both installed as part of our project, have served very well. They have enabled those trees planted in recent years to be maintained, but conditions have not been suitable for new tree planting during the recent harsh dry times.

But planting and caring for a wide variety of multi-use trees remains a top priority.

If you or some-one you know are planning to be in South India this winter
please visit the farm and see for yourself what is happening, and be part of the learning exchange. Simple accommodation awaits you (see picture above) and a warm welcome. Janet Bedford is preparing to be there again for 3 months from mid-November, so please contact her if this is ‘speaking’ to you.
