In a good year the monsoons bring enough rain to fill the River Vellar and ‘lakes’ in the area for a few months. The rest of the year it is very dry.

We plan to capture and preserve the rainfall by techniques such as percolation ponds, contour bunding, mulching and tree planting.

A small derelict well on CHATI land has been much enlarged and strengthened and a pump and irrigation pipes purchased. This will enable us to grow crops all year round.

ABOVE: The River Vellar is the boundary between the districts of Cuddalore and Perambular. For much of the year it is completely dry.

ABOVE: The existing well being widened and deepened.

ABOVE: The completed well awaiting the instillation of a pump, piping and electricity supply.
